Death link to too much red meat

Scientists have produced new evidence suggesting eating lots of red and processed meat damages health.

They found big meat eaters had a raised risk of death from all causes over a 10-year period.

In contrast, a higher intake of white meat was associated with a slightly reduced risk of death over the same period.

The US study, featured in Archives of Internal Medicine, was based on more than 500,000 people.

The need is for a major reduction in total meat intake

Child abuse 'alters stress gene'

Abuse in early childhood permanently alters how the brain reacts to stress, a Canadian study suggests.

Analysis of brain tissue from adults who had committed suicide found key genetic changes in those who had suffered abuse as a child.

It affects the production of a receptor known to be involved in stress responses, the researchers said.

The Nature Neuroscience study underpins the impact of stress on early brain development, experts said.

Previous research has shown that abuse in ...

Who are Hamas?

Hamas takes its name from the Arabic initials for the Islamic Resistance Movement.

Branded a terrorist organisation by Israel, the US and the EU, it is seen by its supporters as a legitimate fighting force defending Palestinians from a brutal military occupation.

It is the largest Palestinian militant Islamist organisation, formed in 1987 at the beginning of the first intifada, or Palestinian uprising against Israel's occupation in the West Bank and Gaza.

The group's short-term aim has ...

Gaza conflict: Who is a civilian?

The bloodied children are clearly civilians; men killed as they launch rockets are undisputedly not. But what about the 40 or so young Hamas police recruits on parade who died in the first wave of Israel's bombing campaign in Gaza?

And weapons caches are clearly military sites – but what about the interior ministry, hit in a strike that killed two medical workers; or the money changer's office, destroyed last week injuring a boy living on the floor above?

As the death toll mounts in Gaza, ...

relative Clause

Relative Clause

Adjectival (or relative) clauses can function only as postmodifiers of a nominal head. This nominal head is called antecedent, and the relative pronoun that introduces the relative clause is replacing the nominal head. Relative clauses may appear both in the subject and in the predicate of a sentence.

[in the examples below, the clauses appear between parentheses]

The day was sunday-two days before the Feast. I was caring of a house after it was my father's turn to relax after a night of guarding. I had to do something to enjoy my self during the day; I found nothing but a blue pen: a pen was given to me instead of a blue one else and it's a long story about it. I do remember how cold it was when I arrived home the last wednesday; till I said Meknes was a paradise, but, you know, this is how you may feel if you were in my shoes. My brother, he's still ...
